About the Book
"Maroo of the Winter Caves"
"Maroo of the Winter Caves" was published in 1984 and was written by Ann Turnbull. The book takes place during the Ice Age period when Earth suffered with extremely low temperatures and was covered with continental and polar ice sheets as a result. The book explores cultural and historical information about how tribes struggled to live during that time. The protagonist's tribe, along with other tribes, migrated with the purpose of reaching the Autumn Grounds, where they would settle after a harsh winter season. However, due to some difficulties, Maroo's tribe gets left behind, and to make matters worse, with a shortage of food . Therefore, the protagonist, Maroo, and her brother are sent off to get help, but with very limited time. On their way they face several obstacles from nature, the biggest one being a mountain lion, but most importantly Maroo's greatest fear, which are spirits. These confrontations make Maroo a stronger and wiser person, which overall helps her character development throughout the story. By overcoming her fears and making serious sacrifices, Maroo is able to save her tribe and her family.
